If you’re hosting your own New Year’s party and want to make it an occasion to remember, just follow these simple rules to avoid common mishaps and enjoy the fireworks without stress!
Don’t Start at the Last Minute
Look, I get it. I’m a perfectionist. Everything has to be just right. If perfection is your goal it helps to get a game plan together at least a week before the main event. Pre-prepare any party snacks that can stand a day or two in the fridge, get a rough head count from your attendees to keep the bar stocked and make a schedule for the day ahead of time so you’re not still running around while your guests are trickling in. Building in time for a shower and quick clothes change, for example, can be a lifesaver for a host (and your guests).
Don’t Stick To One Thing
Themed parties can be a great time, but don’t forget that your guests will all have different tastes. If your entire menu is seafood-based, for example, make sure there are at least a few veggie options or some cheese and crackers strategically placed throughout the area. Some guests may not care for champagne, so keep a bottle or two of wine or other spirit on hand to satisfy those with broader palates. And for the love of God, make sure to ask about any allergies your guests may have! The worst way for a festive gathering to end is a trip to the ER for your boss’s new 23 year-old girlfriend.
Don’t Open It Up Too Much
Raging all-night parties were fun in college, but as the host of a gathering you don’t want to deal with a horde of tipsy strangers at five minutes to midnight. Of course your guests should be allowed to bring friends of their own, but request that they at least give you a heads-up before the graduating class of 1992 shows up to demolish your crudités before the clock strikes 12.
Don’t Take It All On Yourself
Even with the best-laid party plans, there can still be unexpected roadblocks along the way. During these moments your friends and loved ones will be lifesavers. Send your significant other out for the last-minute champagne run or text your best friend with an emergency request for their famous crab dip (nobody will know if it’s actually store-bought). You’re the host — they’ll be glad to help. If not, just tell them they’re not allowed to drink your booze.
